Navigating Major Life Changes
Jul 29th, 2009 by kathy
It’s been a while since my last blog post. So much has happened in the last 12 weeks. I passed my certification exam, my husband landed a new job and I’m spending August moving my loved ones into new homes.
It felt really good to have all my hard work and study hours rewarded with an official certification. So good that I decided to go for another related certification. That exam is in October. Ok, so I really am a nerd – I like to study and solve problems.
I’ve been working through “The Artist’s Way” for several weeks now trying to let my artist self emerge from the ingrained engineer nerd persona. It’s going to take some work – but I’m enjoying the journey.
My family is in yet another transition as the adult daughters move to new apartments this year (translated as Mommy, I need a few dollars to buy a new bed and pay my security deposit). The back to school costs never end – they just get more expensive. Can we go back to crayons and backpacks?!
The biggest change is one I wrote about many weeks ago – an unwelocme change that forces us to move in directions we may have never considered. My husband’s new job is in North Carolina. It’s a nice area, but our home is in South Florida. So for a while, we will do the long distance marriage dance and take things one day at a time.
With all these changes, this is what I’ve learned so far:
- Go with the flow. This blog is all about flow. We don’t have to figure out the whole picture all at once. Deal with one present moment at a time. Find flow in being present.
- Having adult children scattered around the country provides a good reason to travel and experience new things. Encourage them to go after their own dreams.
- Keep updating your work skills and education – you just never know what’s around the corner.
- Cherish every day with those you love – you never know when you may be separated.
- Go buy a box of crayons and color for an hour. Honoring the artist child inside helps you cope with just about anything.
What’s your best tip for navigating major life changes?

Congratulations on all the positive life changes in the last few months. It’s amazing all the things that happen to us that we never would have planned if we got to script our own life.
I’m looking forward to coloring with my box of crayons…
